The Penobscot County Registry of Probate houses and archives original records dating back to 1836, and processes and schedules probate and civil filings and proceedings in support of the Probate Court's operations in care of its elected judge. It's staff consists of a full-time, elected Register of Probate and 4 full-time clerks. The Register of Probate is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the court and maintaining of records as required by the Maine Revised Statutes. Court is in session each Tuesday and Thursday of the month with the Judge of Probate presiding.
The mission of the Penobscot County Probate Court and Registry of Probate is to protect the rights of the people of Penobscot County and to serve them both efficiently and effectively.

Judge of Probate

The first independent to serve as a Penobscot County Probate Court judge. The Judge of Probate is an elected county position with a 4-year term. Only attorneys at law admitted to the general practice of law in this State and resident in this State may be elected or appointed as judges of probate. These officials are elected to oversee the county probate office, which handles: Adoptions of Minors and Adults, Guardianships /Conservatorships of Minors and Adults, Name Changes, Wills and Estates, Trusts, and Name Changes. Probate judges are the only elected judges in Maine. The position is part-time, with court presiding on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
