The Judge of Probate is an elected county position with a 4-year term. Only attorneys at law admitted to the general practice of law in this State and resident in this State may be elected or appointed as judges of probate. These officials are elected to oversee the county probate office, which handles:
Adoptions of Minors and Adults, Guardianships /Conservatorships of Minors and Adults, Name Changes, Wills and Estates, Trusts, and Name Changes. Probate judges are the only elected judges in Maine. The position is part-time, with court presiding on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
